But rather this: various Gestalten in the same light, that permeates everything" Stockhausen The first, untitled version, written in —53, was a sparse-textured, " punctual " composition scored for fluteE-flat clarinet Stockhausen The London Sinfonietta Kreuzspiel Kontra Punkte Zeitmasze Adieu, contrabass clarinetcontrabassoontrumpetcontrabass tubapiano four handsharpviolinand double bass Assis This score was almost immediately rejected by the composer, who created a new version in the spring of for flute, clarinet in A, Valerie Dore Get Closer clarinetbassoontrumpet, trombonepiano one playerharp, violin, and cello.

This version has the distinction of being "Nr. The hyphenated title signifies a "counter-action" against the punctual style currently in vogue in the early s, an action embodied in the composition itself as a process of transforming dissociated "points" into cohesive "groups" of notes, and therefore from an essentially static condition to an audibly dynamic one.

The title Stockhausen The London Sinfonietta Kreuzspiel Kontra Punkte Zeitmasze Adieu implies a criticism of Stockhausen's own earlier composition Punkteas well as of his friend Pierre Boulez 's work Polyphonie X —a criticism for which Boulez seems to have forgiven Stockhausen Maconie— This performance, however, was only of roughly the first two-thirds of the work, owing to lack of sufficient time for the pianist to prepare the extremely difficult closing part.

Later that same year, Scherchen conducted the first complete performance on a Domaine musical concert in Paris Kurtz One review of the partial premiere reported that Scherchen immediately repeated the piece because, shortly after the beginning of the first performance, the pianist had gotten two bars behind, despite being assisted by the composer "who from time to time played a note obviously not within the capacity of ten fingers but required by the score" Wolf

(Kontra-Punkte / Zeitmasze / Stop / Adieu) You always return to this word in Stockhausen ’s oeuvre; transparency. This transparency, even in highly complicated situations, when many instruments of different families and characteristics share the vibrating sound space, is always a key element in the way the players interact.

The Deutsche Grammophon London Sinfonietta LP with Kontra-Punkte and Zeitmasze was exceptional, which is why I bought this album. These early Stockhausen works are strongly serial, with hints back to Webern. Refrain would be better without the yells that /5.

KONTRA-PUNKTE and ZEITMASZE are highlights of Stockhausen's early serial method of composing in the s, and true classics of the genre, while STOP and ADIEU employ more open forms. KONTR-PUNKTE has been recorded several times, but this version conducted by Stockhausen is the definitive version. KONTRA-PUNKTE (COUNTER-POINTS) for 10 instruments (), rec. July 8, ZEITMASZE .
