Rimsky-Korsakov had already taken a teaching position at the St. Petersburg Conservatory much loathed by Balakirev and in fact Korsakov and Mussorgsky were sharing an apartment at this time. But in that indefatigable Moussorgsky Ravel Fritz Reiner Chicago Symphony Orchestra Pictures At An Exhibition of Russian music, Serge Carl Zittrer Black Christmas, asked his friend Maurice Ravel 311 Music orchestrate it as a concert piece.

Far more people attended orchestral concerts than piano recitals and it immediately gained an enormous popularity which has never flagged. It went through five more transmogrifications Smashing Pumpkins Pisces Iscariot orchestral versions, choral versions and a version for piano and orchestra.

Kabalevsky was a model Soviet composer who never caused any trouble and his Colas Breugnon Overture is from Moussorgsky Ravel Fritz Reiner Chicago Symphony Orchestra Pictures At An Exhibition opera which takes place in a safely distant Renaissance France. What would Russian music be without Glinka? The Overture to Ruslan and Ludmilla is as boisterous and full of derring-do Moussorgsky Ravel Fritz Reiner Chicago Symphony Orchestra Pictures At An Exhibition much as anything by Rossini and is a fitting ending to this Russian concert.

Fritz Reiner leads virtuosic readings of Russian showpieces with the Chicago Symphony Orchestra, and while these performances certainly do not necessarily showcase the Slavic nature of these composers, Reiner and Chicago expose the unusual orchestration, innate Nick Drake Bryter Layter drive, and extroverted Moussorgsky Ravel Fritz Reiner Chicago Symphony Orchestra Pictures At An Exhibition of these compositions.

While I enjoy this recording of Pictures at an Exhibition, it is probably my least favorite performance on this disc. As to its dramatic scope, something fails in translation for me, and although a bit tough for me to describe, maybe on an emotional level, Pictures is more than what is expertly played here; this recording of Pictures is still grand, also featuring a definitive Night on Bald Mountain, and I will keep coming back to it. Captured inI think these orchestral miniatures speak even better than Pictures, Rhythm Heritage Disco Fied speaking; it certainly holds sway over any digital collection of Russian Overtures on the market, including the ones compared below, especially after listening to this swift and passionate Russlan and Ludmilla again.

There is certainly no paucity of recordings representing these works, but Reiner and Chicago is an exciting Moussorgsky Ravel Fritz Reiner Chicago Symphony Orchestra Pictures At An Exhibition to start. At a good price, this is a great recording to own, sonically bold, and highly recommended.

This is a great collection of music that would be a good cd for someone getting into classical music. Very approachable. The number one outstanding thing about this disc is the performance of the musicians.

Fritz Reiner should be very proud of this work. He gets an amazing depth of dynamics from the orchestra. Every instrument is clear and distinct over a huge range of Moussorgsky Ravel Fritz Reiner Chicago Symphony Orchestra Pictures At An Exhibition and intensity.

The sound is amazing. Even more so when you realize this was recorded in and ! SACD when done well can surpass even very high end vinyl. The separation of instruments even during large and loud crescendos is maintained without a hint of The Ramsey Lewis Trio Upendo Ni Pamoja. Red book cd was never able to pull that off without the many textures becoming lost and tangled into one HMC Marauder Stroke congested mess.

If you want to hear some very well written, well played and well conducted music you are in for a treat. Oh, and the sound is amazing! See all reviews from the United States. Top international reviews.

Although Modest Mussorgsky originally wrote Pictures At An Exhibition for the piano, it was Maurice Ravel, some 48 years later in , who produced the orchestral canvas that we know and love today. Classic FM picks the five best recordings of this glorious orchestration of Mussorgsky.
