While Fritz Reiner was on vacation in Europe from his duties as conductor of the Chicago Symphony, James D Hall Freak On Down I Wanna Get Into You concertized in Vienna and made a few recordings with the Philharmonic.

While these pieces should have been recorded by him in Chicago to give them the spontaneity I think they deserved by his own orchestra, they are not to be ignored. Anything Reiner recorded and wherever he recorded it, it certainly was not to be ignored. Reiner's recordings of these pieces have been given heaps of praise in past forums; there is no need for me to provide additional. Format: Audio CD. This pair of Strauss tone poems was recorded in The Brahms and the Dvorak were recorded in The Brahms and Dvorak dances have been re-mastered to great effect in excellent stereo sound from The Strauss recordings are clearly of earlier vintage and lack clarity of bass and the sound is not clearly defined as stereo.

Maybe significantly the reproductions of the earlier Brahms Dvorak Reiner Vienna Philharmonic Hungarian Dances Slavonic Dances make it clear that the dances were originally issued in stereo but the illustration of the Strauss disc is that of the mono Decca Eclipse LP which was preceded on the mono RCA Victrola label. This mastering vindicates his judgement totally. Quite apart from the sound, Reiner delivers Strauss performances with the VPO that have considerable humanity and warmth.

The famed Chicago readings deliver greater brilliance. How nice to hear Reiner apparently enjoying himself as well as creating performances of impressive power and drive. This compilation has become a very collectible disc for all the reasons as above but is now becoming difficult to locate. Be the first to review this title. This CD is reissued by ArkivMusic.

Herbert von Karajan leads the Berlin Philharmonic Orchestra in these characteristically Slavic dances. The Dvorak Slavonic Dances here are played with immaculate accuracy and beauty. It is a shame Karajan never recorded the complete works.

ENGLISH. Fritz Reiner dedicated himself to the interpretation of works by modern composers such as Richard Wagner, Richard Strauss and Béla Bartók, and it suited him well to tackle works such as Brahms’s Hungarian Dances and Dvorák’s Slavonic Dances.
