Along with the various alternate takes included at the end of the second disc comes one very special extra - a new seven-minute performance of the sequel Conan the Destroyer's "Crystal Palace", retitled "Chamber of Mirrors".
This piece is brilliant. Moving from quiet mysticism to raw danger to a main theme similar to "Anvil of Crom" but more proudly heroic, it captures the medieval fantasy feel of the property as perfectly as any piece from its esteemed predecessor.
For die-hard collectors who appreciate having different recordings of the same score, and for completists who generally prefer multi-disc sets, the Basil Poledouris The City Of Prague Philharmonic Orchestra And Chorus Nic Raine Conan The Barbarian edition of the Conan the Barbarian soundtrack is absolutely worth tracking down.
For others who would rather save a few bucks and still enjoy the essence of the score, without a few interesting but inessential extras, the older Varese Sarabande edition is no less of a classic than it's ever been. If I were forced to choose one or the other purely for the Conan the Barbarian score, I would probably stick with the original, but the different qualities of the Prometheus edition and its fantastic Conan the Destroyer bonus track make me glad to have both in my collection.
One can't help but smile at the similarity in tone and structure between the opening track "Anvil of Crom" and the main titles of Jerry Goldsmith 's score for Total Recall. For those of you who are familiar with the composer's later work for Robocop inyou will be familiar with the man's unique sense of blending alien elements together, specifically the cold industrial clanging and eerie electronic motives bringing the cyber-punk universe of Robocop to life with the heart-breaking harmonics of traditional orchestration detailing the protagonist's feelings. As was the case with Jerry Goldsmith, Poledouris seemed able to create something totally different by slamming two contradictory elements together, and make them become inseparable in the process.

The first third "Riddle of Steel" scores the musings of Conan's father, as he gets a tad Richard Dawson Nothing Important philosophical about swords.

Basil Poledouris lived in California and often relaxed there sailing his yacht or surfing with family and friends, until sadly he lost his battle with cancer on 8th November Zoe Poledouris, one of the Basil's daughters, has also contributed to his film scores. A theme used in "Conan the Barbarian" is based on something she played on the recorder, and she also wrote a song for "Starship Troopers".
Basil's other daughter Alexis, the youngest has contributed an Bizarre Inc Technological to Tadlow's recent definitive version of "Conan the Barbarian".
Basil Poledouris changed his career once he scored the legendary Arnold Schwarzenegger in this John Milius epic about a man who seeks revenge against the warlord who massacred his tribe. Of course, even Tangerine Dream Electronic Meditation people don't mention Conan the Barbarian as one of the founders of the indestructible 80's sound, it nonetheless remains a soundtrack that literally kills every Nadie La Fond Three Way Situation that comes its way.
And after all this time, it has received its epic release. Prometheus released a 2 CD edition of Conan the Barbarianfeaturing the complete Minute Film Score which has been newly recorded. It is complete with bonus material including music from the sequel Conan the Destroyer and a 24 page full colour booklet.
This baby not only delivers epic filmmusic with additional unreleased material, it does it in symphonic exquisite Nick Mulvey First Mind quality. Need I say more?
